The Shippon is a beautiful cosy country cottage for two, a retreat from the world for a few days, in a lovingly restored stone barn, tastefully furnished and styled. It is full of character and charm, from the uneven old walls and stripped pine Victorian doors, to the old beams and window seat. Set in 2 acres of private gardens which our guests are welcome to enjoy.

The Shippon (an old Dales name for cowbyre) is more than three hundred years old, much older than the farmhouse close by. According to the County archaeologist it was built as a shepherd's shelter for the herdsmen who wandered this desolate area, with their flocks, when wolves roamed the moor around.

All of the two acres of gardens, orchard and lawned areas are available to our guests, with garden furniture scattered around. Please do use our charming Summerhouse. It has uninterrupted views of the Cleveland Hills, so take your cup of tea or glass of wine and sit and relax, or just watch the birds (we have fourteen nest boxes)!

You may see the resident squirrel, or deer in the adjoining fields. In the summer evenings our small colony of pipistrelle bats will be out and about. Andrew's guinea fowl are always amusing and if he has baby guinea fowl (keets) he would be delighted to show them to you and let you see the hatching process. We garden organically here. The old apple tree overhanging the cottage is a Yorkshire Dog Nose and has a prolific crop of square sided apples, much enjoyed by our Autumn guests.

A very peaceful place to stay

Location is very peaceful albeit close to a rural road. The cottage is very well equipped and has a dedicated parking space. Free access is given to the beautiful grounds.
