Town: The village of Shieldaig is a scattering of largely whitewashed cottages and other buildings, set along the shore of Loch Torridon. Established around 1800, Shieldaig, the Gaelic name for Herring Bay, boasts lovely views and some of the nicest sunsets imaginable. Some of the original cottages still exist and have been joined by several more as the village expands. This area is a paradise for fishermen, hunters, walkers and photographers alike. Shieldaig comes complete with a small collection of tourist services, including a shop and a seafront hotel. Nearby Lochcarron is home to one of Scotland’s oldest 9 hole golf courses set beside the sea, as well the well known Lochcarron Weavers, where tartan is still woven. Other attractions within reach, include the Isle of Skye and the world famous National Trust gardens at Inverewe.
